Safe to use phone on tripod for self-portraits?

Hi, I'm planning on visiting Venice and Rome in September, assuming the Covid situation permits. Since I'll be solo travelling, I'll be using a lightweight tripod with my phone mounted on it to take pictures of myself. I don't have a fancy camera and I'm pretty happy with the picture quality of my phone (Google Pixel) so I always just use that combo.

I've heard that pickpockets are pretty common in Venice and Rome so I'm wondering if it's okay to put my phone on a tripod and stand about 3-4 meters away to take pictures of myself with it. How big is the risk of someone stealing my phone while it's on the tripod?

Having portrait painted in Venice

Hi all - My husband and I will (hopefully!) be going to Italy in early October. I recently saw pictures online of people having their portraits painted on the street in Venice, but the photos looked to be a bit older. I was wondering if this is something that is still done (maybe not right now with COVID?). If it is, is there a specific place to look, and any advice on cost (so we have enough cash on us if we do find one)? We would love to be able to take this home as a souvenir. If they do this is Rome, I would also love to hear more about that as well. Thank you so much in advance.

Preliminary Itinerary trip fro Rome-Florence-Venice-Rome

Hi Everyone,

Re-planning my postponed trip from 2020 this year. I seem to have forgotten all the valuable tips I had received for my previously planned trip. Is August a bad time to travel in terms of closures and holidays? Since I have nothing book yet, would it be better to travel in September instead?

I am thinking the following itinerary for now:

Aug 5-10-Roma

Aug 10-13-Florence with day trips to Sienna, Pisa?

Aug 13-15-Venice

Aug 15-16-Train back to Rome and fly home.

Is this too ambitious?

Will be travelling on a Covid tested flight in and out from Rome from Canada

Purchase a SIM Card in Rome

Does anyone know where I can purchase a SIM card in Rome that would provide phone, texting and data throughout Europe? And what normal cost is? In London, I purchased a few years ago, 6 GB for 15 pounds (have lost it unfortunately).

3 full days in Venice or 2 days in Venice and 1 in Florence

Hi all,

Hope you could help me with this little dilemma. I have also posted in the Venice Forum.

I am currently planning a trip to Venice with a friend at the end of September for three days. Both have never been to Venice, I have been to Florence on a day trip from Rome in February years ago, and despite the rain, liked it a lot. My friend has never been. The question is now, do I stay all three days in Venice or take one day to visit Florence? Please list pro's and con's. Thanks in advance!

Coronavirus situation

Hi I saw the news unfolded today on the current situation with the Coronavirus in Italy. We have already booked our flights and accommodation for our 3 week itinerary 9-27 Apr to Rome, Sorrento/ Positano, Venice, Bologna, Parma, Cinque T, Florence, and Tuscany. We are travelling on our own (not following tours) and have booked a few bike tours in the major cities like Rome and Florence.

Advice needed to help us decide to cancel trip or just go with it. Thanks

Ease of logistics

Hello everyone

Thanks for any help you can provide with this planning query. We plan to visit 4 places over 10 days late March next year. For few different reasons we have to do those 4 places and have only 10 days. Therefore I am looking for the best/efficient way to get these places. Our flight in and out is from Rome. We need to visit friends/ business in Venice, Tuscany and Naples. My initial thought was to stay in Rome for couple of days then travel to Venice then Tuscany , Naples and back to Rome via direct train. But wanted to see if we should instead travel first to Venice, then Tuscany, Naples and finally Rome to make the flight out easier? We are hoping to take flights and train but could get a car if need be especially thinking of Tuscany. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again

5 week Trip Plan

We are planning 5 weeks in Italy next Sept! We will be going to Rome,Tuscany,Cinque Terre,Venice and Amalfi Coast.

Which would be the best direction of places to go? We do not want our last week in Rome as we prefer Rome in the beginning of the trip! Which would be the best last place to be other than Rome for easiest access to a departure airport. Thanks

italy in february

I know i am early especially with Covid, but we are hoping to visit in third week of Feb 2022 to Italy, we have about ten days. Visiting from Vancouver, Canada.

We have only been to Rome 25 years ago, this time we hope to visit Florence, Pisa and Venice. We would like to drive ( five adults ), because we would like to include smaller pretty towns along the way between cities. is this a good idea or would train be more convenient? The weather seems wet but this is the only time we have and we thought Italy being south might be a better choice than some other european countries?

Any advice, comment, recommendation will be much appreciated.
